Hypertension Treatment Q & A

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the measure of how hard blood hits the walls of the arteries as it travels through the body, and it serves as an indicator for artery health. Blood doesn’t move efficiently through narrow arteries, so the heart must pump harder. When the heart pumps harder, it uses more force to move the blood, so it hits the walls of the arteries harder, raising your blood pressure.

What causes high blood pressure?

There are many different risk factors for high blood pressure, but for most people, there is no clear indication as to why they develop this condition. It is a normal part of aging. The walls of the arteries lose their elasticity as you grow older and the blood flows less efficiently.

Secondary hypertension means there is a known cause, or underlying condition. It be a reaction to a drug or be a symptom of a disease. Conditions that cause secondary hypertension include:

  • Kidney problems
  • Adrenal tumors
  • Thyroid disease
  • Congenital defects in the heart or arteries
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Obstructive sleep apnea

The first step in hypertension services will be to rule out an underlying cause for your high blood pressure.

What are the treatment options for high blood pressure?

The doctor may prescribe a low-salt diet to reduce your sodium intake. Any person over the age of 51 should limit their salt consumption to 1,500 mg per day.

Weight management is a key element in blood pressure control, as well. This means eating healthy and getting exercise. If lifestyle changes are not enough to control the problem, there are drugs like diuretics and beta blockers that can help, as well.
