Diabetes Treatment Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is an umbrella term for a group of diseases that influence the way the human body utilizes glucose (sugar) for energy. Insulin acts as a key that allows just the right amount of glucose into each cell. When you have diabetes, this process doesn't work in the same way.

What are the different types of diabetes?

There are three different types of diabetes, each with a specific disease process.

  • Type-1: The body fails to produce insulin in the right quantity. The immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells and destroys them. The exact cause of this malfunction is unclear, but it usually develops in childhood.
  • Type-2 : Type-2 diabetes generally occurs later in life as the cells age and become resistant to insulin. The pancreas fights to produce enough insulin to counteract the resistance, so instead of sugar entering the cells to provide energy, it builds up the blood. There is a strong link between type-2 diabetes and obesity.
  • Gestational: This condition is associated with pregnancy. The placenta produces a hormone that can make cells resistant to insulin. The condition will resolve itself after the baby is born.

What are the treatment options for diabetes?

The doctor will tailor diabetic services around your specific needs, but the plan will include both lifestyle changes and drug therapy.

  • Diet management
  • Exercise program
  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Insulin injections
  • Drug treatments like metformin

Diabetes treatment is a balancing act that takes time to master. It can also change over time, so regular medical monitoring is part of the program.
